Improper Headspace

Prolegomena

Headspace: The distance from the bolt or breechface to a point on the chamber of a firearm.

Improper Headspace (excessive) - can lead to failures such as cracks, case head separation, and splitting of the case neck. A catastrophic case failure can allow hot gas and brass to escape from the receiver.

Improper Headspace (insufficient) - can prevent a firearm from going into battery. Forcing the breech closed can cause it to grasp the bullet too tightly, leading to excessively high chamber pressures.

Headspace: A person's mental position in relation to reality.

Improper Headspace (excessive) - can lead to overthinking, irritability, depression, and catastrophic mental failure.

Improper Headspace (insufficient) - can lead to confirmation bias, poor decision making, and excessively high levels of ignorance and stupidity.
